The images on this page serve as a study for a WIP series, The Weight of Water. This series focuses on our bodies moving through the water to portray personal myths colliding with cultural ones. For instance, in Sule Skerry, the first image below, the subject (like a selkie) is caught between his two worlds. The weight of water isn’t just about the physical effort of diving, it’s the weight of inheritance and the stories we tell ourselves.
The old stories gave the sea its own creatures. Not monsters, exactly, but not quite us either. According to an old Orkney ballad, Sule Skerry is the selkie homeland — a place that’s fully his for as long as he stays, though that was never going to be long. He’s caught here between his two worlds.
